julez
Julez is a large-scale sculptural installation honouring the strength, beauty and foundational presence of Black women.
Standing at 6 feet tall, the figure embodies grounded power rooted in the earth, crowned in resilience and protected by mystical guardian forms that symbolise guardianship, loyalty and ancestral protection. The work speaks to Black womanhood as foundation, lineage and sacred connection to Mother Earth.
Intricately constructed from thousands of cut threads, synthetic wool, 24-carat gold leaf, gold wire and embellishments, the surface carries both delicacy and strength. The layering process reflects the complexity of identity, softness held within power, vulnerability protected by spiritual force.
This piece is dedicated to the memory of two of the artist’s cousins who passed away in 2019, transforming the installation into both tribute and spiritual offering.
