CREP CITY – AVATAR: A STUDY IN PERCEPTION

Truman Brewery, London
2015

First presented at Crep City in 2015, Avatar: A Study in Perception marked an early conceptual shift within Karla’s practice. The work began as an Adidas-inspired superhero figure, originally conceived within the context of sneaker culture. When the initial pitch did not progress, the piece was reconstructed and reimagined ,evolving beyond brand reference into a standalone sculptural entity.

The interactive figure invited viewers to project meaning onto the form, questioning binary interpretations of identity, power and intention. Audience members were encouraged to record their responses, collectively shaping the narrative surrounding the work.

This installation signalled a transition from customisation toward conceptual fibre-based sculptural inquiry, laying early foundations for Karla’s later avatar-based works.
