tHE AWAKENING
The Awakening is a sculptural installation exploring the moment of conscious realisation the decision to unplug from societal conditioning and awaken to personal power.
Constructed using recycled denim and layered fibre techniques, the installation is rooted in a cool blue palette. The tonal language evokes the shock of cold water a symbolic jolt into awareness. That first deep breath of clarity where one recognises that control lies not in circumstance, but in thought and perception.
The use of recycled denim speaks to imperfection or rather, the reframing of imperfection as strength. Worn fabric becomes armour. What society discards becomes foundation. The mannequins, rigid and still, represent life lived unconsciously moving through systems without awareness.
At the centre stands Queen Amirah, guarded by Yera and her brother Kijani, warrior figures whose electronically shifting heads act as protectors. Together, the trio represents the awakened subconscious mind: filtering distraction, dismantling limiting beliefs and standing firm in self-determined reality.
Finding Evo
Finding Evo is the narrative extension of The Awakening installation.
In previous exhibitions, viewers often remarked that Cornwall’s mannequins appeared so lifelike they might begin moving at any moment. Playing on this perception, she challenged herself to bring that illusion into reality, constructing a fully wearable mannequin costume. Drawing on over 25 years in the fashion industry, the sculptural garment blurred the boundary between static object and living form.
Collaborating with dancer and choreographer Evo, the concept evolved into a film component within The Awakening. In the video, Evo represents the awakened subconscious the aspect of self that has broken free from conditioning and is ready to explore infinite possibility.
When the artist and photographer leave the studio, Evo comes to life, dances and departs, leaving the installation behind.
His departure becomes symbolic. Once awakened, consciousness cannot simply return to stillness.
